Beginner's Guide to Surfboard Accessories: What You Actually Need

Just got your first surfboard? Before you hit the water, there are a few accessories that can make a huge difference in your performance and safety. Here's what you actually need — no fluff.

Traction Pads

A traction pad (also called a deck grip) replaces surf wax on the tail of your board. It gives you a consistent grip for your back foot, which is critical for turns and pop-ups. Look for a 3-piece EVA pad with a raised kick tail for better control. Our surfboard traction pads start under $20 and fit most board sizes.

Surfboard Fins

Fins affect how your board handles in the water. Most beginners start with a thruster setup (3 fins). Fiberglass single fins are great for longboards, while twin fin sets work well for fish-style boards. Getting the right fin for your board makes a noticeable difference in performance.

Wetsuit

If you're surfing in water below 65°F (18°C), a wetsuit is non-negotiable. A 3/2mm full wetsuit is the most versatile option — warm enough for cold water, thin enough for mild conditions. Our wetsuits are available in 2mm and 3/2mm full-body styles.

Wetsuit Booties

Cold feet kill a surf session fast. Neoprene wetsuit booties keep your feet warm and protect against rocks and reef. A must-have for winter surfing.

Deck Pad (SUP/Kayak)

If you're on a SUP or kayak, a full-length EVA deck pad gives you grip and cushioning from nose to tail. Much more comfortable than a bare board for long paddle sessions.
